With the EU Commission seemingly unable for years to reach any form of consensus in how to deal with this, the numbers just keep on growing.

Facts4EU.Org has regularly reported on the EU’s spiralling problem of asylum applications. This is now reaching crisis point, as the numbers look like they might threaten the levels in the record period of 2015-2016, when Angela Merkel unilaterally opened the EU’s doors to migrants.

Suella Braverman and her Home Office civil servants must now be watching this nervously, knowing that the more migrants who enter through the EU’s porous borders, the more will end up attempting the crossing to the UK in small boats.

Brexit Facts4EU.Org Summary

EU asylum applications Jan-Jun 2023

519,000 asylum applications received from Jan-Jun 2023

This is a 28% increase on the first six months of last year

This number does not include the 4m Ukrainians who have a different asylum process

[Source: EUAA report, 05 Sept 2023.]

© Brexit Facts4EU.Org 2023 – click to enlarge

FACTS4EU.ORG PREDICTION for end-2023 : 1.25 million
(Based on previous years’ patterns)

Highest levels for some countries for over eight years

During the initial six months of 2023, the EU+EEA received an exceptional 519,000 asylum applications, marking the highest figure since 2016. For many nationalities the numbers exceed 2016 levels by a long way.

Historically, the volume of applications tends to be significantly higher in the second half of the year. If this pattern is repeated this year, then Brexit Facts4EU.Org predicts more than 1.25m asylum applications will be received in the EU by the end of the year.

Germany, Spain and France accounted for 63% of the total

Germany’s number (30%) was almost double that of the next two countries

Spain (17%)

France (16%)

The problem is backing up. Last year, Turkish applications were more than double those of any previous year. On top of this, 2023 is projected to see an even greater number of Turkish applications.

Iranian and Russian applications more or less doubled compared to the same period in 2022. Last year Pakistani numbers hit their highest level since 2016. This is likely to be exceeded in 2023.

Moroccans and Bangladeshis lodged record high numbers of applications in 2022, with 2023 projected to continue this upward trend. Guinea and the Ivory Coast also started to figure prominently this year. Ivorians lodged a record number of applications for this time of year, and were nearly as many as in the whole of 2022.

Observations

The numbers we have quoted from the European Union Agency for Asylum (EUAA) report yesterday do not include all migrants. These numbers only show those who have chosen to enter the asylum system. A great many more entered the EU in the first half of this year, but some (no-one knows how many) have simply disappeared into the black economy or are encamped on northern French shores, waiting for small boats to take them to the UK.

For years the EU Commission has been struggling unsuccessfully to agree an asylum policy with the EU member states. Unsurprisingly one of the issues is that of how to spread the problem around, with some countries being overloaded while others deal with very few. Numbers in countries such as Hungary are negligible, for example, with just 22 applying for asylum in the six months to June.

The overall migrant situation is so bad that some months ago the EU Commission agreed a deal with the tyrannical dictatorship in Tunisia – a regime which is responsible for severe human rights abuses and which does not even come close to meeting the EU’s standards for democracy and rule of law. Nevertheless the Commission has done a deal and has effectively bribed the Tunisian government with 1bn euros in an attempt to slow the increasing flows of migrants using this as their transit point into the EU.

With new routes opening up regularly, it seems that this is a problem that can only get worse, as yesterday’s report shows.

We must get reports like this out there

Reports like the one above take far longer to research, write and produce than many people realise.
